Hey folks,
I have just uploaded Session 23 to the site (apologies for the delay).
I have to say that I think this is one of the best sessions we have done. It is Classic D+D through and through with some of the most traditional beasties you will ever see.
Hope you enjoy it 😀
Cheers

Thanks Hal.
I am busting a gut this morning listening to Part II of session 23. You guys are histerical.
My favorite quotes are..
Hal:”You see an 9 by 9 antechamber”
Paul: “Followed by a 9 by 9 unclechamber”
Someone else said I enter with my torch in one hand an my bosum in the other.
I’m laughing my but off this morning. Let’s hope there is another ooze or jelly in the remaining 60 minutes.

Just finished the session. Great stuff very entertaining. I was hoping for another ooze or slime in the last hour. Imagine my surprise when I heard what was around the next corner. Very well done.

Man, that was great! The cube was always a favorite of mine. Kind of a large, moving version of that jello the school used to serve at lunch; you know, the kind with last weeks left over fruit chunks in it. Actually, I could swear that stuff moved once or twice too 😯
Thanks for making work bearable today!
Happy Birthday ENoa4!

Some thoughts arising from part 2 of this session…
I think I agree with Paul. 3rd+ D&D is getting ridiculously complicated. When Hal and Steve need to really delve into the rules during what should be a smooth-running piece of action then I start to wonder whether something’s wrong with the game, certainly not the players or the GM.
Paul seems to be nostalgic for 1st AD&D, which our group used to play, however these days we are pretty happy staying with 2nd edition, THAC0 and all, which quite honestly I never found to be so much of a problem. Add the vast amounts of unplayed and second-hand stuff we have queueing up (as you no doubt know, 1st converts to 2nd really easily) and it’s looking rather like we might not bother (even though we all have the 3rd Ed rules).
Anyway, I’d be delighted to hear comments on my (mere) impressions, particularly from the WLD team on how they find 3.n edition. Hal, perhaps a Product Review of 3+ if you feel the urge? It would also be very interesting to hear from anyone here who has played the earlier editions and preferred 3rd? What do you find the strengths of the 3rd(+) system to be.
Phew – wibble mode is off. 😀
Thanks you lot, for another exciting session – regardless of playing system.
Brian
P.S. Of course, there’s always Hackmaster. 😈

I like the ability to customzie your characters skills a bit more in 3rd Edition, but I agree that it seems a bit rules heavy. I have read reviews on various sites comparing the editions. I own the 1st, 2nd and 3.0 rule books. I can’t shell out more for 3.5, but when I’ve played most recently I’ve fallen back to 2nd edition, the edition I know best. I must admit I miss some things available in 3.0 but it’s very enjoyable and my favorite version.

OK, This is only for those versions I have. Never had the orginal paper cover ones. 😉
D&D (basic, expert etc).
Lovely introduction to roleplaying, very limited to what customisation of characters you could do ,until you got to the 3rd set of books (the black ones), which I can’t remember what the name was! That had the 1st idea of weapon specialisation I think…
AD&D(1st edition)
I can remember the excitement of getting this. Lots more options for players but still very structured. Dungeon Lore and Wilderness Lore gave the ideas of skills. Unearthed Arcana gave the most overpowered character type I’ve ever come across! DMG seemed to have rules for EVERYTHING (reading the tiny book version is “exciting” to say the least…).
AD&D(2nd edition)
Basically a tidied up version of 1st edition + the 2 Lore books. Fixed some of the wilder rule inconstancies. LOTS of “offical” rules variants (the Complete series). Skills & Powers tried to make it “modular” (I really like it).
It got SO unwieldy by the end though, 3rd edition was welcome!
D&D(3rd edition)
V. welcome when it came. Made the game alot more modular (though not as much as Skills & Powers from 2nd edn, more like v. simplified Rolemaster). Some of the changes which made sense on their own, when combined made some big issues so out came…
D&D(3.5 edition)
Superficially pretty similar to 3, but fixed alot of the issues (& brought up some new ones!). Listen to rpgmp3 WLD to get the joys and moans for it! 😛
Which is “better”? Depends what you want. If I could play any of them as a player, it’d probably be 2nd edition with Skills & Powers. As a GM, I like 3.5 but I have alot of “home” rules already…
