Can you explain thac0 to a newbie to 2nd edition?
lol 😆
THAC0 is the abbreviation for ‘To Hit Armour Class 0’
In 2nd edition, a fully armoured warrior in full plate armour with a shield had AC 0.
Your roll to hit them was your THAC0 on a d20.
For each point above AC 0 (AC 1, AC 2, etc), your roll was easier by 1 point…THAC0 10 needed to roll 10 to hit AC 0, 9 to hit AC 1, 8 to hit AC 2, etc.
For each point below AC 0 (AC -1, AC -2, etc), your roll was harder by 1 point…THAC0 10 needed to roll 10 to hit AC 0, 11 to hit AC -1, 12 to hit AC -2, etc.
A fairly simple procedure all in all. One of the standard character sheets had a chart for calculating such ‘Attack Rolls’, with your THAC0 going in the AC0 box, and the rest being calculated accordingly.
Wow, thats easier than everyone made it out to be. The people around here were like: thac0 is the hardest thing you will ever learn for roleplaying. I’d gotten the general idea from Icewind dale. Thank you for a very good explanation. Now I’m off to show people how nasty the grapple rules are so they can quit whining about thac0.
